A cup of tea with your grandmother on a quiet afternoon.  A cup of tea with a girlfriend or group of friends. Or on a windy afternoon while reading a good book. You may have memories like this or maybe you have never tried a cup of tea, with friends or alone. Either way, tea has long since been a tradition in many cultures, to welcome families, to welcome friends. In celebrations, to honor someone special, to relax, or to treat a loved one or yourself medicinally. Whatever the use, tea is a treasure to behold.

Served hot or cold. Black, Green, White, Red , Herbal. The choices are as vast as the sky. Take your pick.

Legend has it, that in 2737 BC in China leaves from a tree dropped into the Emperor Shen Nung's cup of boiling water. His servant had boiled the water for hygienic reasons before the emperor was to drink. But this time the water was turned brown by the fallen leaves. Being a scientist, the emperor was curious and decided to try some of this new concoction. He found the liquid aromatic and refreshing. Since that serendipitous moment, tea has been part of many cultures around the world.

Wise women herbalist, midwives, shawman and Native Americans have been using herbal teas(called tisanes) for centuries to heal and prevent disease. I don't think we can really say where it all started. There is a connection on this planet that we have with the plants that let us know we are taken care of. Plants offer us extraordinary opportunities to find cures and treat many ailments and disease. Enjoying a cup of tea can be more than a favorite past time to enjoy!

Tea is an evergreen plant of the Camellia family. It grows best in hot and humid conditions with temperatures ranging from 50-85 F, rainfall of 80-90 inches a year, and elevations from 1,000-7,000 feet. A combination of altitude and humidity promotes the desired slow growth, and the higher elevation teas are generally more prized. Many of the world's most famous teas - high grown Ceylons, China's Wuyi's,(known as the 'skinny' tea) India's Darjeeling's,

Taiwan

's Tung Ting - come from bushes cultivated above 4,000 feet.
